Stats were not being recorded correctly, unlocks were being accessed early because of the stat tracking bugs. However, upon release the eager gaming public discovered that along with these new features came a myriad of bugs that seriously affected the gameвЂ™s playability. They increased the number of guns available, added in a single-player campaign to complement the multiplayer, and even offered a beta to those who paid extra for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Red Orchestra 1 was an Unreal Tournament mod that won the вЂњMake Something UnrealвЂќ contest back in 2004-05, leading to a license for Tripwire to develop in the Unreal Engine. This annoyance aside, the game suffered most from bugs and issues with the playability, things that werenвЂ™t necessarily a fault of the design of the game but of the implementation of that design. If the player didnвЂ™t then move out of cover and far enough away quickly he would bleed out and die before being able to apply the bandage. As a result, sometimes if the player was trying to apply a bandage to his self while close to a wall he would instead snap to cover. The commands for snapping to cover, using an object such as a radio, and applying a bandage to your self were all mapped to the same key. One of these was assigning 3 commands to one button. While the overwhelming majority of these new mechanics worked, there were a few poorly thought out ones as well. Applying bandages to yourself is also something rare in the multiplayer FPS genre, giving players the ability to heal themselves (but not others) while in combat.

Holding the reload button caused your soldier to pull back the bolt on the rifle or clip to check the state of the magazine, informing the player of how full it is. Although these unique mechanics did make the game more difficult, the designers had also created ways to get around these obstacles. This mechanic particularly was something nearly unheard of in first person shooters and alone set Red Orchestra 2 apart along with the brutal combat. A first person cover system was implemented as well with various features attached to it like moving with your cover (a la Gears of War but in 1st person) and blind firing over the cover or around the corner. The user interface is purposefully minimal to suit the realism, there is no ammo count available, instead of a health bar there is location based damage and a вЂњbodymapвЂќ showing where the player has been damaged. Red Orchestra 2 featured a very tight design that eschews many of the contemporary standards of first person shooter games, and many of them worked extremely well. According to, the game has sold over 13,000 units to date, so why the low player count? In this document the design, playability and current position in the marketplace of Red Orchestra 2 will be examined in an attempt to determine what lasting impact the game has had. Unfortunately, the game suffered from a myriad of other problems, and today the player count has dipped from over 9,000 players the week of launch, to a peak of around 1,500 players today. How did TripwireвЂ™s small team plan to compete against the juggernauts of the industry also pumping out first person shooters? They wanted to offer more immersion, grit and realism than anything else on the market, and upon the games release they delivered what is recognized as one of the most realistic experiences available in a shooter. Set in the Eastern Front of World War II, Red Orchestra 2 is a direct sequel to TripwireвЂ™s first game, Red Orchestra, and is only the third game in TripwireвЂ™s portfolio. Red Orchestra 2 was a bold attempt by a relatively small and unknown developer to create a first person shooter unlike any other on the marketplace today.
